Apparently thinking she was having an affair, a 61-year-old stabbed his wife to death in Murtal, Styria, on Tuesday afternoon. The grandson, who allegedly witnessed the crime, raised the alarm. The husband confessed.
There are said to have been repeated arguments between the couple in recent days. On Tuesday the situation escalated completely. The grandson, who was visiting his grandparents in Pöls-Oberkurzheim at the time, panicked and informed a neighbor who called the emergency number. The woman had just come home from work.
Kitchen knife as murder weapon
When a local patrol arrived on the scene, police found the blood-covered body in front of the apartment building. The suspected husband had just come down the stairs from the first floor apartment and was arrested without resistance. The murder weapon – a kitchen knife – was seized.
Escaped via the stairs
When questioned by investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Department, the man confessed to the bloody crime. The argument started in the apartment, the 57-year-old fled via the stairs and then collapsed outside.
“The motive may have been jealousy,” said police spokesman Markus Lamb. It is not yet known whether the woman actually had an affair or whether the 61-year-old, who has psychological problems, only imagined it.
Autopsy ordered
The murder weapon is now being forensically examined. The Leoben public prosecutor’s office has also ordered an autopsy on the body and a physical examination of the suspect. The 61-year-old is in custody and further investigations are underway.
