Another suspect has now been arrested in connection with the Viennese machete murder in mid-April. He is a man of Algerian descent. He was arrested in France.
The machete murder shocked the whole of Austria. A 31-year-old Algerian was dismembered with a machete and murdered on April 20 at the Jägerstraße metro station in Vienna’s 20th district (Brigittenau).
At that point, several unknown people attacked the 31-year-old. Witnesses called the police emergency number around 12:50 p.m. When officers arrived, the attackers fled. The victim was taken to a hospital, but died from his serious injuries.
The 24-year-old Algerian jumped into the Danube Canal while trying to escape
A 24-year-old Algerian was arrested as part of an immediate search. He had tried to flee the crime scene by jumping into the water of the Danube Canal. The police fished him out of the water and the man has been in custody ever since. Others involved managed to escape.
Two more arrests on May 3
Two more arrests were made in this case on May 3. 450 grams of marijuana and almost 1.2 kilograms of cannabis resin were seized from the apartment of a 29-year-old and a 34-year-old Algerian. During the course of criminal investigations, a connection with the murder was established. The Public Prosecution Service is now investigating all three men on suspicion of murder, confirms authority spokeswoman Nina Bussek.
The extradition procedure is underway
The prosecutor in Vienna is confident that the recently arrested suspect will soon be moved to a cell in the Vienna-Josefstadt prison. The extradition process is underway. “The transfer has already been approved,” Bussek said. The man is expected to be transferred to Vienna soon, where the regional criminal court must then decide whether to impose pre-trial detention.
