According to the Vatican, transgender people in the Catholic Church can generally be baptized. The responsible dicastery (central authority) announced this on Wednesday.
Baptism can take place as long as it does not cause scandal or “confusion.” The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which is responsible for proclaiming and defending the Catholic faith, also has no objection to the baptism of children of same-sex couples who are adopted or born through surrogacy.
Opening, yet warning against “sin”
Pope Francis has repeatedly spoken out in favor of opening the church to LGBTQ believers. Nevertheless, the head of the Catholic Church insists that for him homosexuality is a sin, “like any sexual act outside marriage.”
The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. Catholic teaching defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman that must be open to the transmission of life.
