After the eruption of an underwater volcano, a new island has formed near the Japanese island of Iwoto in the Pacific Ocean. The rocky island has a diameter of about 100 meters.
The volcanic island of Iwoto (Iwo Jima) is located about 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo in the Pacific Ocean. The eruptions occurred about a kilometer away.
Accordingly, clouds of smoke rose every few minutes. They are said to have reached a height of more than 50 meters. Occasionally the volcano also spewed out pieces of rock with a diameter of several meters.
Japanese media, citing the weather bureau, reported that so-called volcanic earthquakes had been observed since October 21.
The new landmass formed near the crater of the underwater volcano. There were underwater eruptions in the area last year and in June this year.
The island could become even bigger
The new island could become even bigger if the eruptions continue. Thats not sure.
