Unwanted foam party on Friday morning in Vienna: the million-dollar anniversary fountain “WirWasser” in the Sonnewendviertel has been transformed into a foam bath. It is not yet known who is behind the campaign.
150 years after the first Viennese high spring water pipe was put into use, the so-called Jubilee Fountain in Vienna-Favoriten went online on October 24.
Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) called the work of the artist collective Gelatin a ‘fountain of solidarity’, while Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen noted that water and Vienna are ‘inseparable brothers and sisters’.
“Wasteful behavior”
The Vienna People’s Party had already criticized the action at the time: “Rates are being increased everywhere in the city and the ‘red chic’ from the Danube City to Favoriten is using power by repurposing allotments and the network. And then this luxury fountain for two million euros – this wasteful behavior shows once again that sustainable politics cannot be achieved with ‘colorful images’ alone,” said Peter Sittler, councilor of Favoritn.
Just a week after its opening, several figures on the €1.8 million fountain were defaced. The city of Vienna has filed a complaint.
