A nightclub in London’s West End has been fined £120,000 for serving caustic soda instead of salt with their tequila.
The incident took place in 2021. Four women wanted to party at the ‘Tiger Tiger’ nightclub and ordered tequila. Running out of salt, the bartender grabbed a white container in an unlit area behind the bar.
Waiter thought the substance was salt
He assumed it was salt, scooped the substance out and served it to the visitors. The women licked the so-called salt from their hands, drank the alcohol – and immediately vomited.
The bartender then tried the drug himself and burned his mouth and tongue. He had collected sodium hydroxide – caustic soda, an essential ingredient in drain cleaners.
The victims would bleed from their mouths
Rescuers arrived and took the women to the hospital for chemical burns in their mouths. The police closed the club because there were initial suspicions of terrorism. Some victims would bleed from the mouth.
Great as a warning
Aicha Less, a councilor in London’s Westminster borough, said the incident highlighted how serious failure to adhere to basic safety measures can be. She hopes that the high fine imposed by the court will be a warning to all businesses and that such incidents will not occur in the future.
