The war in the Middle East has been raging for more than a month – and there is no end in sight. Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galant has now said he is prepared for a years-long struggle to find anyone involved in the October 7 massacre in Israel. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Austrian Volker Türk, identified “disproportionate attacks” by Israel in view of the many civilian casualties in the Gaza Strip.
The conflict against the Hamas organization, which is classified as a terrorist group, is likely to continue for a very long time. Galant stated that he would take action against those responsible for the major attack on Israel about five weeks ago – “regardless of whether it takes a week, a month, a year or possibly even years.”
He rules out a compromise with Hamas and other extremist groups in the Gaza Strip, which would have harmed Israeli civilians and killed many. “We will eliminate them all,” the defense minister declared.
The UN High Commissioner warns of violations of international law
Austria’s UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called on Israel on Friday to immediately stop attacks using highly explosive weapons on densely populated areas in the Gaza Strip. “Given the predictably high number of civilian casualties and the large-scale destruction of civilian objects, we are deeply concerned that these are disproportionate attacks in violation of international humanitarian law,” Turk said in the Jordanian capital Amman.
Turk: War crimes on both sides
The High Commissioner had previously spoken about war crimes on both sides after visiting the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. He referred to the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 and to the Israeli counter-attacks.
The destruction around hospitals makes it difficult for people to seek help there. The call to evacuate hospitals in the northern part of the Gaza Strip is “a death sentence” for patients, Türk said. Hospitals in the south of the Gaza Strip could no longer accept more people.
