At the turn of the year, Mr and Mrs Österreicher can also expect a new household tax: the ORF contribution will be collected from January 1, 2024. Anyone who does not pre-register should be prepared for fines.
As is known, from January the ORF contribution will replace the GIS fee that was previously due for TV or radio. The amount is the same for everyone: 15.30 euros per month, plus any state tax.
Every main residence address must pay. Payment is made once per household and only in houses and apartments used as primary residence. There are no costs associated with holiday apartments and second homes.
There is currently a lot of fuss about the new rates, because letters are flying into many households these days…
Not registered? There is a risk of terrible punishments
Readers of “Krone” in Gailtal (Carinthia) were surprised when they saw the contents of the letter – and they are probably not the only ones: you must register for the new ORF fee, otherwise you will have to pay a fine. And it is quite steep.
Also applies without radio or TV
If no person has yet been registered with the GIS at a main residence, at least one adult must register. According to the ORF contribution law, this applies to everyone – even those who do not have a radio or TV set. Anyone who does not do this will in any case have to pay the full annual amount! That is almost 200 euros – in addition to the fees that must be paid.
There is good news for anyone who has already registered a radio or TV and pays GIS rates. You don’t have to do anything, because the ORF contribution service automatically takes over names, address details and payment details. Anyone who has a valid exemption certificate for their place of residence does not need to submit a new application. According to ORF, the criteria for payment exemption have remained the same.
