A woman was attacked by a shark off the coast of South Australia and suffered serious head injuries. The 32-year-old was in the water with a friend when the animal struck. The shark also bit her on the face.
The accident took place near Port Noarlunga, south of Adelaide. Numerous emergency services responded to the scene and provided first aid before the victim was taken to a hospital, 9News reported Friday.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before”
There were numerous swimmers on the beach, including many children. “It was absolutely terrible,” Tom Bearne, who lives nearby, told ABC. “I’ve never seen anything like this here in my entire life.”
It was initially unclear which shark species it was. Emergency services searched for the animal, but without success.
It was the fourth shark attack for the state of South Australia this year. Two of the victims were never found. A 64-year-old woman survived an attack in early October with serious injuries to her leg.
