In Wörth near Pöchlarn in the Melk district, a fire broke out in a recycling centre, and in Wiener Neustadt, several fire brigades with around 70 emergency services fought the flames in a waste processing plant.
In Wiener Neustadt, thick smoke could be seen from afar. A fire broke out in a waste disposal plant and kept numerous Florianis on their toes. Several fire brigades – the volunteer fire brigades of Wiener Neustadt, Steinabrückl, Wöllersdorf and Bad Fischau – were called to the scene of the accident and fought together against the flames, which spread quickly. The Florianis were very concerned about the adjacent field and adjacent parts of the subcamp.
Eventually, the emergency services were able to slowly bring the fire under control. However, the extinguishing work proved laborious: in order to extinguish the numerous embers, the 400 m³ mountain of waste had to be pulled apart with the help of two wheel loaders.
The official cause of the fire is not yet known, but the waste mountain’s operational manager, Ing Rudolf Udo Wiesmüller, suspects that lithium-ion batteries have been causing problems for some time: “A small scratch on a rechargeable battery is enough. it suddenly catches fire. This has happened repeatedly in the past. However, such a large fire is an exception. I would like to thank the deployed armed forces for their prompt assistance!”
42 deployments in just ten days
The major fire was the 42nd operation in ten days for the FF Wiener Neustadt volunteers, who worked 561 hours during this time. The capacity limit was slowly being reached, according to operational manager BR Christian Pfeiffer, commander of the FF Wr. Neustadt: “Especially now, in the middle of the holiday season, it is becoming increasingly difficult to provide the necessary resources. Such major fires are not the problem, because neighboring fire departments can provide help quickly. It is the daily routine with smaller activities that slowly takes over.”
Fire at the recycling center near Pöchlarn
At almost the same time, a fire broke out at a waste paper department in Wörth near Pöchlarn in the Melk district. Employees immediately raised the alarm and tried to extinguish the flames. The waste caught fire for unknown reasons.
Emergency services from the Pöchlarn and Ornding fire brigades removed the loose stored goods from the hall with a wheel loader and finally extinguished them outside with wetting agents. The fire was extinguished after about two hours.
