A German (47) and his 13-year-old son ended up in rough terrain while hiking in the Rax-Schneeberg area (Lower Austria). They were rescued by helicopter and rope.
A journey into the “wild” nature can often end dangerously. At least when outdoor enthusiasts and hikers explore completely “uncharted territory”, unprepared and ill-equipped. The involuntary detour into impassable terrain ended earlier this week in the Rax-Schneeberg area with a mountain rescue operation for a holidaymaker and his child. The 47-year-old German and his 13-year-old son had previously gotten into trouble in the mountains on a route on Mittagstein.
After starting in Hirschwang in the Neunkirchen district, the two hikers, who were unfamiliar with the area, continued their journey after stopping at a hut. They used a mobile phone app to navigate, but could not find their way and eventually got stuck on the upper part of the mountain.
No more back and forth
At around 2pm, the German made an emergency call and the Reichenau mountain rescue service and the Alpine and aviation police responded immediately. The duo was rescued unharmed using a rope. The 47-year-old will be billed for the costs of the avoidable rescue operation. He is also accused of endangering physical safety.
