After the shooting at a special education school in Offenburg, Germany, more details are now gradually becoming known. A father of an uninvolved schoolchild spoke loudly to the suspected shooter and persuaded him to put down his firearm.
He then held the 15-year-old until police arrived. Family father Sabah Ayoub reported on RTL: “A boy came with a gun. I told him, ‘Put the waffles down!’ He threw the gun away and I grabbed his hand.” Ayoub was supposed to have had a parent meeting on Thursday, but the school director pointed out the shooting. According to his own statement, he then went back and met the suspected shooter.
The teen was shaking and not speaking. The father of the family does not see himself as a hero. He became scared at that moment and thought about his eight-year-old twins who were at school.
Jealousy as a motive?
According to the investigation, the teenager probably received the gun at home. He is said to have shot a classmate of the same age, who died shortly afterwards in hospital from his serious injuries. “According to the current situation, the victim was hit by two shots,” investigators said. Immediately after the attack, the alleged perpetrator hit a teacher and slightly injured her. Jealousy could be the motive for the crime.
The 15-year-old is now in custody on suspicion of manslaughter. The apartment where the teenager lives has already been searched. “Further evidence has been secured, the assessment of which will take some time,” the report said.
Molotov cocktail discovered
According to security sources, the suspected shooter also had a Molotov cocktail (see video above). An incendiary device was found on him. “During the search of the school building, police were able to find and confiscate a bottle containing suspected flammable liquid in the stairwell,” the investigators said. The extent to which this bottle has anything to do with the crime is still being investigated.
The school remained closed Friday and a crisis intervention team cared for the students. Police continued to collect evidence.
