“We won’t be eating bread again any time soon”: A Viennese woman who turned to the “Krone” had discovered dead maggots in the packaged bread of a discounter. The animals were clearly fried.
The young woman had bought the ready-to-eat white bread at a food discounter in the 23rd arrondissement. “I bought it on Thursday and didn’t notice anything, on Friday we noticed the maggots,” the woman told Krone. “They were dead and stuck to the bread in the wrapper, so they didn’t get inside the wrapper after it was sealed.”
In such cases, the eggs of the maggots sometimes enter the bread during production, which then hatch into the package. “We then stopped eating,” said the finder. “We haven’t eaten bread since then, and we probably won’t in the near future.”
Despite extensive pest control in grain stores, maggots are still found in food. Even if there is usually no immediate health risk, these contaminated foods should be thrown away immediately.
Recently, a celebrity had to deal with maggots in the food: When tennis star Novak Djokovic waited in a Melbourne hotel for questioning for those who had to leave the country in January, conditions there were so bad that maggots were even found in the food.
