Following the partial collapse of a highway tunnel under construction in northern India, rescuers have been searching for buried workers, according to media reports. About 36 to 40 people could be trapped in the rubble of the tunnel near the small town of Uttarkashi in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported on Sunday, citing rescuers.

Uttarakhand Prime Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has been in contact with the authorities concerned since the incident became known, the Times of India reports.

160 emergency services assist
According to the Hindustan Times, 160 emergency services were involved in the rescue efforts at the scene.

According to the newspaper, an approximately 150-meter-long section of the approximately 4.5-kilometer-long tunnel collapsed around 4 a.m. early on Sunday.

An Indian government statement on the project said the tunnel should reduce travel times in the region while protecting the environment as it does not require the felling of trees.
