On the Italian island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea, Europe’s largest active volcano, Mount Etna, spewed large amounts of glowing lava into the air on Sunday. The alert level has been raised from yellow to orange, but there have been no reports of damage yet.
On Sunday evening there was a thick cloud of lava, igneous gases and rock above the mountain, which is more than 3,300 meters high.
Explosions heard
According to the Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the so-called eruption column reaches a height of 4.5 kilometers. Explosions could be seen and heard again and again. The alert level has been raised from yellow to orange.
Ash also fell on several towns around Etna, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea.
Operations at Catania Island Airport continued. Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. The mountain is about 3350 meters high. However, the exact height changes time and time again due to eruptions and cinder cones.
