Smoke and lava emitted – Etna calms down again, warning level lowered

Date:

In Sicily, the Etna volcano, which spewed large amounts of glowing lava on Sunday, calmed down again on Monday. The Italian Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Catania reported a relatively normal night.

The mountain, more than 3,300 meters high, had spewed out large amounts of glowing lava and rock. In the evening, a thick cloud of ash and magmatic gases rose above the volcano to a height of 4.5 kilometers.

Last weekend explosions were seen and heard again and again. Ash fell on several towns in the area, such as Milo and Zafferana Etnea. However, there was no major damage. Operations at Catania Island Airport continued.

The air traffic alert level has been reduced
On Monday, authorities lowered the alert level for air traffic from red to orange. Mount Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. The mountain is about 3350 meters high. However, the exact height changes due to eruptions and cinder cones.

Mount Etna, located in the east of the Italian island, has erupted repeatedly in recent months. The eruptions generally pose no danger to people living around the mountain. The area around the volcano is a natural park and popular with many tourists. It has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2013.
