“You cannot put into words what the suspect did. For some tragedies there are no right words,” the prosecutor said as he began the terrible trial before the Vienna Regional Court. “He destroyed two lives in the most brutal and despicable way. The actions and images are incredibly disturbing and have shocked even the most experienced investigators,” she continued.
The 51-year-old suspect sits stiffly on the court chair and does not move. The Pole is surrounded by prison guards who are also equipped with electric shocks. He is generally not so calm, but rather very aggressive and characterized by ‘a sadistic lack of empathy’, as psychiatric expert Peter Hofmann confirms in his report.
Victims had no chance
On January 1, 2023, the man, who was staying illegally in Austria, broke into the home of a pharmacist in the Danube city. There was an ‘incredible explosion of excessive force’, as his lawyer Astrid Wagner confirmed. “The first victim’s fight for survival lasted half an hour. The man defended himself, but had no chance,” says the prosecutor, calling it exaggerated.
“Like torture”
The 74-year-old’s death was the result of severe beatings by the Pole, which the prosecutor said was “like torture”, including ten blows to the head with a cutting tool. After the crime, the man spent several hours in the suspect’s apartment, where he washed and exchanged his shoes for the victim’s sneakers. The perpetrator, who had many previous convictions to his name, then drove to Graz.
The children were in the bathtub
A week later, the father of two returned to Vienna to look for his next victim. In the 21st District, he broke into the home of a 31-year-old mother whose children (ages four and five at the time of the crime) were in the bathtub. In the kitchen he overpowered Mrs. S. and killed her by stabbing her with at least two kitchen knives.
“It is particularly tragic that the girls spent the evening and the entire next day next to their deceased mother until the father returned home from his skiing holiday and found them and his deceased wife.” The Pole also took shoes from the second crime scene. he was wearing was eventually arrested.
“I do not know anything”
“I don’t know anything,” says the 51-year-old, who was placed in a home at the age of twelve, quietly. He drank a lot and also used speed and other drugs. According to Wagner, he saw black figures on the tram. He calls the creatures ‘zombies’. Wagner therefore speaks of a delusional illness in her client, who reportedly lived in a tent in Vienna.
