Former Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron will be next Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, replacing James Cleverly, in a unexpected decision from the current head of government, Rishi Sunak.
Before taking office, Cameron will be appointed a gentleman by Sunak to join the Upper House as a parliamentarian, a requirement for joining the executive.
Cameron was prime minister in between 2010 and 2016but eventually resigned after the failure of the referendum Brexitin which a majority of British citizens voted in favor of a break with the European Union, against the government’s official criteria.
In his case, it appears that he is not a deputy, a key requirement to take office as the new foreign secretary, but there is an alternative route where he joins the House of Lords on an emergency basis, according to the BBC.
His return is not unique, as the equally conservative Alec Douglas-Home, Prime Minister between 1963 and 1964, returned to government as head of health in the following decade. However, Douglas-Home was a deputy when he returned to the executive branch.
