Police car rammed – cinematic chase behind champagne thieves

Date:

French thieves also wanted to make a big loot on Saturday evening: they stole two trucks full of high-quality champagne in Reims in northern France; worth at least 600,000 euros. A cinematic chase followed shortly afterwards.

While the fleeing criminals thought they were safe, police quickly searched for the two cars. With success, because the trucks were equipped with tracking equipment, the newspaper “Le Parisien” and the local TV channel France 3 reported.

Jumped from a moving vehicle
Officials eventually established visual contact near Paris, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) from the original location. As several police teams approached the trucks, one of the thieves launched an attack: he tried several times to ram the trucks off the road. But as this did not work, he braked on the shoulder and jumped out of the vehicle, which was still moving.

Shortly afterwards, a car with accomplices appeared: the champagne thief got in and the getaway car drove away. They were able to overtake some police officers as they had to stop the truck, which was traveling at a speed of about 15 km/h.

38 ton truck crashed through barrier
Meanwhile, the two other police cars chased the second stolen truck. This driver also tried to escape with risky maneuvers and even broke through a barrier at a gas station with the 38-ton truck. Apparently in panic, he jumped out of the vehicle in front of a hardware store and was able to escape on foot.

So the thieves had only left traces of DNA – the police assume that they were ‘professionals’ – they apparently not only had precise information about the cargo, they probably also had a network for the resale of the bottles of the luxury brands Moët & Chandon have. The bottles of their coup were seized by the officers – miraculously no one was injured during the operation.
