Great excitement in the German town of Gummersbach in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia: According to police, a law enforcement officer shot at an armed man on Tuesday afternoon because of a threat. Several people were reportedly injured (see video above). The exact circumstances are still completely unclear.
A police spokesperson has now confirmed to ‘Bild’ that a police officer fired his service weapon in the pedestrian area, injuring at least one person. Among the injured were a police officer and the person who caused the incident.
Suspected shoplifter armed with knife
According to information from “Bild”, the gunshot victim is a suspected shoplifter. An employee of the affected branch then called the police, whereupon the man attacked the officers – probably with a knife. About four or five shots were fired.
“We heard shouting outside and saw people running around excitedly in the street. Then I saw the police and then a man with what looked like a knife in his hand. Police initially tried to fend off the attacker with a chair from the bakery. “The man then stabbed a police officer, after which several shots were fired,” an eyewitness describes the dramatic scenes to “Bild”.
The city center in Hindenburgstrasse is currently closed. The situation is stable and there is no further threat to bystanders. All injured people are currently being treated in hospital, the ministry said.
