The persistent heavy rain caused a mudslide in the Tyrolean Pitztal on Tuesday evening. According to the fire brigade, the highway near St. Leonhard was covered in mud and debris over a length of about 50 meters. During the cleaning work, the L16 was closed for approximately two hours or was only difficult to navigate.
According to police, the mudslide occurred south of the Weixmannstall district around 7:30 p.m. “The Pitztalstrasse was constructed there with mud and rubble about 10 centimeters high over a length of about 50 meters,” firefighter Josef Pfeifhofer explains to the “Krone”.
Clearance work with excavator and wheel loader
About twenty firefighters arrived and immediately began cleanup efforts. An excavator and a wheel loader were used, among other things. “During this time the road was closed or difficult to navigate for approximately two hours,” Pfeifhofer continued.
No one was injured. Other than that there was no major damage. Geosphere Austria warned on Tuesday of greater amounts of rain in the Tyrolean Oberland. Mudslides, landslides and localized flooding were expected.
