A nurse who allegedly stole valuables and money worth around 30,000 euros was sentenced on Wednesday by the Graz Regional Criminal Court to a nine-month suspended prison sentence with a three-year probation period for serious theft. The 37-year-old Romanian explained that she had used the money for personal debts. She made a full and contrite confession. The judgment is final.
Wanted to pay off debts
The suspect cared for an elderly woman in Kirchenviertel in Styria between August 2021 and December 2021. In order to pay her debts of approximately 50,000 euros, she stole gold ducats, gold bars, jewelry, silver coins and cash with a total value of approximately 30,000 euros from the house of the now deceased woman on her last working day. . . The nurse then sold the valuables in Romania for approximately 9,000 euros. Together with the cash of about 2,000 euros, she paid off about 11,000 euros of her debts.
“I feel guilty,” the 37-year-old told judge Elisabeth Juschitz. She also brought 500 euros to the hearing as compensation. Her lawyer asked the judge for a lenient sentence. They considered the 500 euros, the suspect’s confession and their integrity as mitigating circumstances. What makes it more difficult, however, is the extent of the value and the exploitation of her position of trust, according to the judge.
After the defendant, who now works as a 24-hour caregiver in Germany, still had private debts of around 8,000 euros, the judge fined her, but declared the 11,000 euros forfeited.
