The Israeli army says it has discovered weapons, military technology and a Hamas command center during the storming of Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza city.
An “operational headquarters” of the radical Islamic Palestinian organization with communications equipment was found in the clinic, army spokesman Daniel Hagari said on Wednesday evening. However, the Hamas-led Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip denied this.
A statement released at the same time said the Israeli army had discovered no weapons or other military equipment at the hospital.
Israel stormed the Gaza Strip’s largest clinic
Less than a day after storming the hospital in the city of Gaza, the Israeli army withdrew from the clinic on Wednesday, according to a journalist present on the scene. Israeli army soldiers and tanks left the hospital grounds on Wednesday evening and took up positions around the facility, the journalist working with the AFP news agency reported. The deployment of the Israeli army was met with strong international criticism.
After days of fighting around Al-Shifa hospital, Israeli soldiers stormed the largest clinic in the Gaza Strip, where at least 2,300 people lived, according to the UN, on Wednesday evening. The army spoke of a “precise and targeted” military operation against Hamas.
During the storm, the partially masked Israeli soldiers interrogated dozens of civilians, some of whom were stripped to their underwear, the journalist reported in contact with AFP. He said the people were released when the Israeli army withdrew.
Devastating conditions
According to a doctor, there was heavy fighting during the action. There was gunfire and bombing for hours, a doctor at the clinic reported, according to the Washington Post.
Witnesses describe conditions at Al-Shifa Hospital as devastating: Medical procedures take place without anesthesia and there is hardly any water, food or fuel.
The Palestinian Authority called the storming of the hospital a “flagrant violation” of international law. The French Foreign Ministry also expressed “very concern” and called on Israel to respect humanitarian law.
