A major search for a demented resident of Linz was canceled last Thursday without success. Then the turning point: the kidnapper (50) suddenly appeared in the Italian lagoon city on Saturday.
The desperate search for a helpless Linz resident missing since Thursday had a strange but ultimately happy ending.
Disappeared from a psychosocial institution
The 50-year-old apparently disappeared from a psychosocial institution in the Neue Heimat district of Linz on November 9 at 2 p.m.
33 helpers searched for hours
His manager raised the alarm around 2:30 PM and the police were called. A major search was launched from 4 p.m. 33 helpers from the rescue dog brigade then combed the area around the social facility for hours. All parks, playgrounds, accessible industrial estates and the Traunauen were meticulously searched. “Of course we have also informed the hospitals and the Linz lines,” emphasizes the police chief of the city of Linz, Brigadier General Karl Pogutter.
In a psychiatric clinic
Around 10 p.m., the helpers had to stop their active search without success because there were no more new clues. There was great concern about the missing man. He was considered disoriented and had no phone or wallet with him. The surprise was even greater when the Linz police received information from Italy that the 50-year-old had been arrested in Venice on Saturday, disoriented, and admitted to a psychiatric clinic.
How he was able to reach the lagoon city is still unclear. “We assume he went there by train. Because he used to come to Innsbruck that way,” Pogutter explains. The man appears to have survived the long journey physically well. His transfer to Upper Austria could take place in the coming days.
