Simon Geiser from Kirchdorf an der Krems (Upper Austria) was elected civil servant of the year in Austria. The young Upper Austrian saved a Red Cross colleague during an operation after an accident.
Simon Geiser (20) from Kirchdorf/K. was elected civil servant of the year in Vienna – and not without reason: the trained tool technician showed on October 31, 2022 that he had learned a lot from his work (he had been employed since April) at the Red Cross.
“It was Halloween night. We were called at midnight due to an accident,” says Geiseder, who reached the “Krone” on the way to Vienna for the awards ceremony. “We were just about to lift the driver of a car onto the stretcher when my colleague suddenly fell over. “He went into respiratory arrest,” he describes the dramatic minutes.
CPR for 40 minutes
And Geiser responded quickly and, above all, correctly. He immediately started CPR, used a defibrillator – as he had previously learned -, coordinated the rescue chain with the others present and also cared for the injured driver. “Fortunately, my colleague responded again when he was taken away by the emergency doctor,” says Geiseder. The resuscitation took 40 minutes.
And as if the story isn’t special enough, the colleague is also a very special one. “Harald is responsible for the care and training of us as civilians at the Red Cross in the local office in Molln, where I was assigned. Helping him like this is of course something very special,” says Geiseder, who completed his community service in December 2022.
Now a volunteer with the Red Cross
He was no longer on duty at Harald Schweiger, but of course we saw each other later at the office.
Almost a year later, Geiseder is still volunteering at the Red Cross because he believes it is important to help other people.
