Global meat consumption is considered a driver of climate change due to its high resource consumption (see also the video above). For this reason, people have been producing meat in the laboratory for years. This should also reduce animal suffering. Italy is extremely skeptical about this development. The parliament in Rome has now passed a ban on laboratory meat.
The Chamber of Deputies in Rome voted 159 to 53 in favor of a ban on the production and marketing of cultured meat. “For us, protecting our tradition, our products and above all the health of Italians is our priority,” said Davide Bergamini, a member of the right-wing ruling Lega party.
The aim of the law is to “guarantee the highest level of protection of citizens’ health and preserve the agricultural heritage,” emphasized the parliamentary group leader of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s party, Tommaso Foti.
The opposition warns of conflicts with the EU
The opposition centrist party “Più Europa” criticized the law as an “anti-scientific and anti-European ban”. The party demanded that the constitutionality of the law be investigated. Brussels has approved laboratory meat. Italy is therefore threatened with a conflict with the European Commission.
The response from ruling party Forza Italia was prompt. “Our bill is not anti-scientific because it does not hinder research, and it is not anti-European either. On the contrary, we hope that Europe will follow our path,” said Raffaele Nevi, head of Forza Italia’s agricultural department. Violations of the ban must be punished with fines between 10,000 and 60,000 euros and the confiscation of the goods.
