After the announcement in the summer, the energy company Kelag in Carinthia has now become serious: customers who have not changed their tariff have had their electricity disconnected since Thursday. 900 affected people had missed the deadline.
Months ago, Kelag informed about the upcoming increase in electricity prices (to 18.61 cents per kWh with an annual commitment, to 23.88 cents without commitment) – and gave customers a deadline of November 15. In plain language, this meant: anyone who does not agree to the new rate or even looks for another electricity supplier by then will have their electricity disconnected.
“No contract status”
And this wasn’t just hot air: the energy company started the first power cuts on Thursday. According to company spokesperson Josef Stocker, 900 customers have missed this deadline and have therefore been in a “contractless state” since midnight, as it is politely put. These so-called change announcements were met with harsh criticism in advance.
Rate increase despite record results
Just like the rate increase itself, Kelag achieved a record group result of 236.3 million euros in the first half of 2023. In any case, spokesperson Josef Stocker is trying to reassure people about the power outages: “All those affected have been contacted and informed before the deadline. If we cannot reach customers at all, we will not disconnect the electricity. Actually, we don’t want to switch off at all.”
If this were to happen, it would be possible to quickly shed light on the darkness of affected households once the rate change is approved. Unless you change providers, it may take a little longer for bureaucratic reasons, as they say.
