75 percent of Palestinians support the attacks by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7. Nearly everyone (98 percent) also says they do not want to forget or forgive the actions of the Israeli military. These are the sobering results of a poll conducted by the Arab World Research and Development Agency among 668 Palestinians.
The survey was conducted between October 31 and November 7 in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including in shelters and households where people are currently living. During the sample, care was taken to ensure that both men and women and all socio-economic groups were personally interviewed.
An important finding: 75 percent of Palestinians support the attacks of the terrorist organization Hamas, at least to some extent. Approval was particularly high in the West Bank region (68 percent), and relatively lower in the Gaza Strip (47 percent). About one in ten people (eleven percent) said they neither opposed nor supported terrorism. 13 percent see themselves as opponents of the attacks. “This is all very sobering,” says lawyer Philipp Brokes on the X platform (formerly Twitter).

War against Palestine, not against Hamas
Furthermore, almost all respondents (98 percent) stated that they would not forget or forgive the actions of the Israeli army since October 7. The war is seen as a conflict between Israel and Palestine rather than between Israel and Hamas. About nine in ten people (91 percent) do not trust the instructions of the Israeli army.
Another result is that the Palestinians surveyed all say they have no safe place for themselves and their families in Gaza. Nearly every second person (48 percent) reported that their home was partially or completely destroyed. 14 percent said they had lost at least one close family member in the war.
37 percent expect a peace agreement
The study also included a possible two-state solution and other scenarios after the end of the war. Moreover, almost one in three people (31 percent) said they expected a long war and later a clear victory for one of the two sides. 37 percent expect a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. At the same time, the majority of Palestinians reject a two-state solution, which is mainly favored by Western politicians. There should be only one Arab state, from the Jordan to the Mediterranean.
A post-war Hamas-led government will likely be rejected; a government of national unity is desired. About one in five people in Palestine (22 percent) expect the Palestinian Authority (PA) to return to the Gaza Strip. Four in ten respondents generally assume that the pre-war status quo will return.
According to lawyer Brokes, the values have been stable for years and the institute is regularly commissioned by the UN to conduct the research.
