US President Joe Biden is committed to the political reunification of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority. After the war between Israel and Hamas, which is ruling the Gaza Strip, both areas should fall under this authority, Biden wrote in an op-ed for the Washington Post published on Saturday.
“Gaza and the West Bank must be reunited under a single governing structure, ultimately a revived Palestinian Authority.”
The US supports a two-state solution
The goal is a two-state solution, Biden wrote. There should be no expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, nor any reoccupation, siege or blockade of this area. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said his country will have to take military responsibility in the Gaza Strip in the near future.
Biden also called for an end to “extremist” violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. Since the radical Islamist Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 and the Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip, Israeli settlers in the West Bank have increasingly used violence against Palestinians. Biden called for those responsible to be held accountable and threatened a visa ban.
Abbas calls for an immediate end to the Gaza war
Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday evening called for an immediate end to the war in the Gaza Strip. In a televised address, Abbas called on US President Joe Biden to “intervene and immediately stop this aggression.” He asked: “What is the United States waiting for while the genocide against our people in Gaza continues?”
Abbas also called on Biden to push for more humanitarian aid to the blockaded coastal strip. Hamas won the 2006 parliamentary elections against Abbas’ more moderate Fatah. A year later, Hamas forcibly took exclusive control of the Gaza Strip. Israel cleared the area in 2005 and evacuated more than twenty Israeli settlements there. Since the terrorist organization Hamas came to power, there have been de facto two separate governments: one in Gaza and one in Ramallah. There have been no new parliamentary or presidential elections since the start of the brotherly war between the two rival Palestinian organizations.
