German climate activist Luisa Neubauer has called on Fridays For Future to reposition itself. There is a need for “new political ideas and new activist paths,” she said. The background includes some pro-Palestinian appearances by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
As reported, Thunberg had repeatedly called for “justice for Palestine” and an immediate ceasefire. Critics accused her of failing to name the victims and those kidnapped in the Islamist Hamas’ major attack on Israel. Climate activists around the world have distanced themselves from Thunberg’s comments.
Now the movement’s prominent German representative, Luisa Neubauer, has spoken out. “The climate crisis of the 21st century requires that we have new stories, new political ideas and new activist paths,” she said. There is of course a certain danger that climate movements will get lost in the political aberrations of the 20th century.”
“You don’t have to present a solution”
She wrongly assumed that the respective national movements would deal independently with issues of anti-Semitism. In Germany, however, it is clear that there is no need to present a solution to a decades-old conflict. However, the position regarding Israel’s right to exist and the handling of anti-Semitic incidents must be clear.
Neubauer had previously said the movement did not need to rename itself after Thunberg’s statements (see video above). She recently criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in connection with climate policy. He has ‘as yet (…) no sustainable concept of government.’ A chancellor “who wants to inspire and encourage people” would “be very helpful at this time.”
