Gardí Sugdub, an island in the Guna Yala region off the coast of Panama, will soon be uninhabited. The indigenous population must leave their homeland and settle in a new community on the Caribbean coast.
Gardí Sugdub is one of about 50 inhabited islands in the Guna Yala region off the coast – and is in danger of sinking due to rising sea levels!
Especially in November and December, strong winds drive seawater into the houses of the local Gunas. It is the first community in Panama to be forced to relocate.
In the new village of Isberyala, 30 minutes from the sea, 300 houses are ready to accommodate the former residents.
Another 62 communities will be forced to relocate in the coming years.
