Doctors Without Borders: – 70 dead after airstrike on city of Khan Younis

Date:

At least 70 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike in the town of Khan Younis, according to Doctors Without Borders. Dozens of residents, including many children and young people, had to be treated in hospital for serious burns.

On Sunday, Nasser Hospital reported 47 deaths. A photographer described how many body bags were lined up. The Israeli army initially did not confirm the attack in the south of the Gaza Strip. For over a month she has been calling on residents of the north to flee to an area in the south, west of Khan Yunis on the Mediterranean Sea. On Saturday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced that the attacks would soon be expanded southward. Recently, the population of Khan Younis was also called upon to flee.

“Constant bloodshed”
Aid organization Doctors Without Borders based its information about the dead and injured on the staff of Nasser Hospital. “The medical need is enormous. A ceasefire is now more necessary than ever to stop the ongoing bloodshed,” said Christophe Garnier, MSF project manager in southern Gaza. For the group to expand its activities, “basic security guarantees and unrestricted access to medical and humanitarian supplies are necessary.”

20,000 people fled south
According to UN estimates, around 20,000 people fled from the north of the Gaza Strip to the south on Sunday. Most arrived at the border crossing into the southern Gaza Strip by donkey carts and buses, and some also arrived on foot.

In total, more than 1.7 million people are now internally displaced, equivalent to three-quarters of the population in the coastal strip. According to the Israeli military, areas have been designated for civilian use. Only Hamas leaders would be attacked there.
