Activists from Last Generation Austria paralyzed traffic to and in Vienna on Monday morning. Among those affected were the Handelskai, Altmannsdorfer Ast and Lobau motorway exits on the A2. The western entrance was also blocked and huge traffic jams formed.
According to the motorists’ club ÖAMTC, activists were in action at several critical points from 7:45 am, causing large traffic jams. The southern motorway (A2) at the Vösendorf junction towards Vienna was affected, with more than ten kilometers of traffic jams and more than an hour’s loss of time. Traffic was also accommodated early on alternative routes B16 and B17.
Four kilometers of traffic jam at the western entrance
For this purpose, the exit of the A23 and the Donauuferautobahn (A22) towards Lobau on Raffineriestrasse was closed, which led to traffic jams in all surrounding streets. The western entrance at Auhof was also blocked. This also led to large traffic jams of about four kilometers into the city on the alternative route Hauptstrasse/Linzer Strasse.
Some of the demonstrators stuck themselves to the street with sand. The Last Generation activists also poured orange warning paint on the asphalt. “We confronted traffic and people’s anger to draw attention to the escalating climate crisis,” the activists posted on X (formerly Twitter, see tweet below).
“We are protesting here because we have no other choice. Our government continues to ignore the devastating consequences of climate disaster. Our future is at stake and we are calling on the federal government to take action now. There are plenty of solutions: the Climate Council comes up with 93 sensible ideas. Time for Nehammer to get to work!”, said Lorenz Trattner, one of the activists.
