The Italian Civil Protection has raised the alert level after the recent volcanic activity on the island of Stromboli. The authority issued the second highest alert (“orange”), it was announced on Monday. This allows the experts to keep a closer eye on the Stromboli. The population is obliged to follow the instructions of the local civil protection on the volcanic island north of Sicily.
A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck south of Stromboli in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday, according to the National Institute of Geology and Volcanology (INGV).
Ash and lava flowed from the Stromboli and flowed down the steep slopes into the sea.
1.5 meter high wave
Civil protection warned of a 1.5 meter high wave and the authorities on the island warned the population with alarm sirens. However, no damage was recorded afterwards.
The more than 920 meters high Stromboli is a very active volcano and erupts regularly.
Every year many tourists from the mainland or from Sicily travel by sea to Stromboli to see the not entirely innocent natural spectacle.
