A representative of the Islamist terror organization Hamas reportedly announced a break in the fighting at 11 a.m. local time on Monday to release hostages.
There is still no agreement to release the hostages, but we are closer to an agreement on this point “than we may have ever been since these negotiations began weeks ago,” said US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer.
An Israeli official denied the report to the Jordanian newspaper Al Ghad.
Qatar Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, whose country plays a key mediating role, said there are now very low barriers to an agreement between Israel and Hamas.
According to a media report, members of Israel’s war cabinet plan to meet relatives of hostages. Cabinet observers, including ministers Ron Dermer and Gadi Eisenkot, have already met family members this weekend.
Family members have been demonstrating for weeks
On Saturday, tens of thousands of people in Israel reached the city of Jerusalem after a daylong protest march to demonstrate for a quick deal to release the hostages. They also protested in front of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s official residence.
