Two attacks within half an hour! Martin Baur, born in Bavaria, experienced the unbelievable at Salzburg main station – and lost 20,000 euros.
His arms are swollen and bruised. Every movement hurts. Even putting on pants is almost impossible these days. Martin Baur is currently recovering from his injuries in a hotel in Salzburg – and remembers Saturday’s events with horror. In broad daylight, unknown assailants attacked the Bavarian resident near the main station twice within half an hour. The perpetrators stole almost 20,000 euros in cash. “It was a setup game,” Baur suspects.
Bayer withdrew 20,000 euros from the bank at the central station
Why did the German have so much cash on him? Baur explains it this way: “I want to move from Munich to Salzburg. I needed the money for the rent.” According to his own statements, he withdrew almost 20,000 euros from the savings bank near the central station on Thursday. He made an appointment for this in advance. ‘Someone must have seen that. “The news will quickly get around in the station district,” Baur is sure. He then moved to a nearby hotel room. “There was no safe there. That’s why I always had the money with me,” says the Bavarian.
The next day, after visiting a local restaurant, he met three young people. A conversation ensued. One of the boys introduced himself as “Niko”. “He said he had nothing to eat and no place to sleep,” Baur said. “Niko” had struck a chord with the 65-year-old. The Bavarian invited the youngster for dinner. And: “My hotel room is big. I let him sleep with me.”
After a quiet night, events came to a head on Saturday. The unlikely duo had breakfast together, after which ‘Niko’ suddenly disappeared. “At the bus stop on Südtiroler Platz, a couple spoke to me in broken German,” says Baur. The man shook the 65-year-old and may have robbed him of an envelope containing around 15,000 euros. “The whole thing lasted a few seconds, after which my money was gone,” is the bitter conclusion of Martin Baur. The couple disappeared, but ‘Niko’ reappeared. He lured Baur into a side street and started beating the German. The Bavarian fled, but did not get far. “Niko” threw Baur against a concrete wall. “I fell to the ground and after that it was easy for him,” Baur said. The perpetrator stole Baur’s wallet along with the remaining 5,000 euros in cash. A witness raised the alarm.
Investigators recovered evidence and secured surveillance video from the hotel lobby. According to the police, ‘Niko’ is about 17 years old, slim and 1.70 to 1.80 meters tall. The couple is probably between 50 and 60 years old. The search for the suspected perpetrators is in full swing.
