Belgian and other Western weapons are said to have been used in the fighting in Belgorod, Russia. The government in Brussels therefore asked the Ukrainian government on Monday to “explain the situation”.
“The rule is clear: weapons we supply to Ukraine are intended for defensive purposes and for the defense of Ukrainian territory,” Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Belgian public radio on Monday. The American newspaper Washington Post previously reported that weapons supplied by the West were used in fighting in the Russian-Ukrainian border region of Belgorod. US intelligence sources were cited in the report.
Rifles made in Belgium and the Czech Republic would have been used. Four armored vehicles from the US and Poland were also reportedly used in an attack in Belgorod last month. Belgorod has been the target of more attacks in recent days. In the region, pro-Ukrainian anti-Kremlin Russian fighters are carrying out attacks on the Russian army.
Terrorists killed in border area?
The Ministry of Defense, in turn, blames the war opponent. On Monday, officials again stressed that there would be attempted Ukrainian “terrorist attacks” in the border area. It concerns two sabotage groups that were stopped by the Russian army on Sunday. Ten “terrorists” were said to have been killed.
Several members of the paramilitary organization also released a video on Sunday claiming to have captured several Russian army soldiers. As a condition of their release, the men demanded a meeting with Governor Gladkow. A little later he was actually open to a conversation – according to the rebels, however, that ultimately did not happen.
