Because regulation is lacking – monkey pox: close contacts not yet isolated

Date:

Since there is still no regulation in Austria, no official isolation could be issued until now. The new rules should come into effect on Tuesday. Is there a long quarantine?

The first case of monkey pox in Vienna is of concern. Also because there are still no precise regulations for the long-term virus disease in Austria: “It is not yet a notifiable disease, therefore no official segregation of contacts has been issued to date,” says Peter Hacker, Municipal Councilor for Public Health.

The immediate environment of the infected person, who is isolated in the infectious and tropical medicine department in the Favoriten clinic, was therefore only called and informed by means of contact tracing.

Contact management must be arranged from Tuesday
According to the Ministry of Health, two arrangements need to be changed to allow for quarantine. “The technical documents for contact management should be available to the responsible health authorities by Tuesday morning. The implementation of the notification requirement for monkey pox must also be completed by that time,” said the cabinet of Minister Johannes Rauch.

The content of the arrangement and the duration of a possible quarantine are covered. According to doctors, the incubation period for monkeypox is usually six to 13 days, but can also last up to 21 days.

Patient strictly isolated in the clinic for a maximum of three weeks
The sick 35-year-old must in any case remain isolated for as long as: until the skin lesions have healed and have scabs, which can last up to three weeks. “The patient himself is doing well, he can get up and eat normally,” confirms the Vienna Health Association. “Visits are not possible, contact with relatives is only by telephone.”

The man was not vaccinated after that, that makes no sense anymore. In close contact, vaccination, a so-called ring vaccination, is recommended.

In an interview: Christoph Wenisch, head of the infection department at Klinik Favoriten

Crown What is monkeypox infection and how is it treated?
Christoph Vienna: Most monkeypox diseases are mild. In isolated cases, severe courses may also occur. We treat supportively and symptomatically.

How long is the incubation period?
The incubation period is between five days and three weeks.

How does the infection develop?
Infection occurs via droplet infection. Contact with body fluids and smallpox skin scabs can also lead to infection.

For what symptoms should you see a doctor or call an ambulance?
If you suspect you have monkey pox, call 1450.

When was the world’s first confirmed human case?
The disease was first diagnosed in 1970.

How dangerous do you estimate the situation?
It is a mild disease, there is a vaccination, there is a specific therapy, we know the route of infection. All in all, this is a medically favorable situation.

Are there any indications how and where the 35-year-old patient could have been infected?
Yes, this is being closely investigated by the health authorities.
