The five-day ceasefire could come after a month and a half of a war that has left more than 14,500 dead, most of them minors and women.
Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Islamist group’s political wing Hamashas stated that he is close to achieving one ceasefire agreement with Israel, after a month and a half of a war that has yielded more than 14,500 deadthe vast majority of which are in the Gaza Strip.
“The movement has given its response to the brothers in Qatar and the mediators, and we are close to reaching a ceasefire,” Haniyeh, who has been exiled in Qatar for years, said in a short statement published on Telegram.
Israel declared the war to Hamas on October 7 following an attack by the Islamist group that included rocket fire and the infiltration of some 3,000 militants, killing around 1,200 people and kidnapping more than 240 in Israeli villages near the Gaza Strip.
Israeli air, naval and ground forces have since launched a counter-attack on the Palestinian enclave, killing more than 13,300 people, most of them minors and womenas well as more than 6,500 missing people who could be under the rubble, meaning the death toll could be even higher.
In this context, the international pressure The ceasefire has intensified, and last week the UN Security Council approved a resolution to establish war breaks and humanitarian corridors in Gaza, after four failed attempts since the start of the conflict.
