From now on, there will be no more active cooperation between the Last Generation activists and the Vienna police. The group announced this in a letter to the executive on Wednesday. The members will therefore no longer go to the arrest vehicle independently and will no longer participate in the arrest. You feel compelled to ‘create stronger images of injustice’.
“We would like to emphasize that this change in our approach is not aimed at the police,” Last Generation wrote in its letter following Wednesday’s protest. “It is important for us to communicate with you transparently and openly to avoid misunderstandings and not to jeopardize the good relationship we have had with you so far,” it continues.
Message after demonstrations in the morning
Only early in the morning did traffic blockades take place again in Vienna at Karlsplatz, Josef-Holaubek-Platz and at the Gurtel in Döbling. A few hours later, members finally addressed their message to officials.
Of course they still want to identify themselves, but they will no longer be involved in the arrest in the future.
Activists in police custody
Well-known activist Anja Windl (26) has also been in custody since Tuesday. She allegedly stuck herself in front of Parliament with super glue and sand and is now being charged with double damage to property because the road was damaged when it came loose. “That could have been solved with acetone,” says the Last Generation on X. Activist Martha Krumpeck’s stay in prison for civil resistance was also extended until next Tuesday.
“Changes are not taken lightly”
Despite the threatening consequences, the activists are not backing down from their plan. However, the changes in their cooperation with the police were not taken lightly by climate activists: “It reflects our increasing desperation in the face of the escalating climate crisis and our desire to increase political pressure on decision-makers.”
Nevertheless, their goal is to continue protesting peacefully and non-violently. They are aware that this change in their approach may pose challenges for officers.
Enthusiastic about gluing work
There has been traffic unrest in Vienna again since Monday. The Last Generation had begun their ‘November protests’. After members joined the House of Representatives on Tuesday, a spokeswoman reported how enthusiastic some of the more than seventy people involved were about the campaign.
