Dutch elections – “Change the world” in the Anne Frank Foundation

Approximately 13.3 million voters in the Netherlands are called upon to elect a new parliament and thus a new government. For the first time, Dutch people can also cast their votes in Anne Frank’s former home.

All voters receive a red chalk with a quote from Anne Frank: “How wonderful that no one has to wait a minute to change the world.” The Dutch traditionally vote with a red piece of chalk. The museum is closed to other visitors on this day. Due to the tensions resulting from the conflict in the Middle East, security measures in the museum have been tightened.

Place reminds us of “what can happen (…)”
With the campaign, the Anne Frank Foundation wants to draw attention to the fact that “freedom, equal rights and democracy” are important. The building is one of the places “that reminds us of what can happen when democracy and law collapse,” according to the Anne Frank Foundation.

The Jewish girl and her family hid in the house from the National Socialists for about two years. She wrote her world-famous diary there. Anne and the other residents of the annex were deported to concentration camps in 1944. Anne died in 1945 at the age of 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
