Republic unpopular – Nepalese demand return of the monarchy

Date:

On Thursday, thousands of Nepalis demonstrated for the return of the monarchy. From their perspective, the republic has not brought progress for the people of the South Asian country.

Police used batons, water cannons and tear gas to prevent the approximately 9,000 demonstrators from occupying the center of the capital. About twenty people were injured in the clashes.

Protest organizer Durga Parsai explained the demand, saying governments have made no progress in the poor Himalayan country since the abolition of the Hindu monarchy 15 years ago. According to the United Nations, the small state between China and India is one of the least developed countries in the world.

The counter-demonstration was peaceful
Nepal was a kingdom for 240 years. The republic was proclaimed in 2008 following an agreement between the six ruling parties and former Maoist rebels following a ten-year civil war (1996-2006). There was also a counter-demonstration of around 7,000 supporters of the republic on Thursday, the police spokesman said. This demonstration was peaceful.
