Lots of high-tech – new passport: “Counters will have their teeth cut off”

Date:

The owner’s photo can be found eight times in the new passport, which will be available from December 1. But the photo is not always visible to the naked eye. A lot of other high-tech has also been integrated into the document: “The counterfeiters will have to try, they will have to cut their teeth on the new passport.”

According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), it was the largest modernization since 2009. The state printing press worked together with the Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Criminal Police Office and also the state crime agencies of Lower Austria and Burgenland.

Polycarbonate data page
Tilt effects, watermarks and parts that are only visible under UV light characterize the travel document. On the data side, there are innovations compared to the older models. As with the driver’s license, the data page is now made of polycarbonate. According to the general manager of the state printing house, Helmut Lackner, it is “resistant and resistant to counterfeiting”.

People with visual impairments will now be able to recognize more easily that this is the passport, at least from the cover: the word ‘Austria’ is also in Braille on the front of the cover. There is also a relief on the back: the letters Ostarrichi.

The design has also changed compared to the previous model. On the new passport, the federal eagle is no longer centered on the cover, but at the top right.

“It must also be beautiful”
The newspaper is inspired by the federal anthem and the motto ‘Land of the Mountains’. For example, the Großglockner is shown on the two middle pages. “It also has to be beautiful,” says Karner.
