Collision with a train – fatal accident at a restricted level crossing

An accident at a level crossing in Micheldorf (Upper Austria) claimed one life on Friday afternoon. The car collided with a regional train coming from Liezen. According to initial information, the driver is likely a local driver. The crossing is secured with signaling systems and half barriers.

The wine-red Skoda collided at a level crossing in Micheldorf with a regional express that was driving on the Pyhrnbahn route towards Liezen. The accident happened at the Eisbach level crossing, which is protected by signaling systems and half barriers. The fire brigade was alerted to a traffic accident in which a person was trapped; when they arrived on scene, the driver had already been extricated from the vehicle.

Failed resuscitation
Unfortunately, the resuscitation measures taken by the rescue service and the emergency physician were unsuccessful. All help came too late for the driver; he succumbed to his serious injuries at the scene of the accident. According to initial reports, the occupants of the train were unharmed. After the accident was registered by the police, the train was evacuated and the fire brigade carried out the clean-up work.

The Pyhrnbahn was interrupted for about two and a half hours between Micheldorf in Upper Austria station and Klaus an der Pyhrnbahn. A replacement rail service was set up. The affected railway crossing was also closed for about two and a half hours. The adjacent B138 Pyhrnpass road was difficult to navigate or had only one lane during the rescue operation.
