A stubborn heat wave keeps large parts of Europe under control. Italy and Spain in particular moan under a stable high -pressure area that drives up the temperatures. In Germany, up to 40 degrees will be expected in the coming days. Meteorologists predict that this extreme heat period could last approximately ten days.
The unusual heat even extends to the highest Alpine regions: on the Colle Major at 4,750 meters, where a meteorological research station is operated, plus 1.4 degrees were measured on Saturday 12.00.
A record was already recorded here in August 2024. At that time, the temperature remained above freezing for 33 hours. Such values are extremely unusual at this level and a clear sign of progressive climate change, which now also affects extreme heights.
High “Pluto” Also in Scotland, Norway, Sweden
According to predictions, the coming week should also be characterized by extreme heat – activated by the African High “Pluto”. This high pressure area will expand the north between the end of June and the beginning of July – beyond the 60th latitude – and even Scotland, Norway and Sweden, as Italian weather experts report.
Sardinia under heat warning
Regional civil protection has issued a weather warning for Sardinia. Temperature peaks of up to 41 degrees are expected – first in the west, then from Monday also in the east of the island. Cooling In the evening and night hours is not in sight: tropical nights with low values of more than 20 degrees are expected in the entire region.
Florence in particular could experience an extreme heat event in the coming days: there, the temperatures on five consecutive days have to exceed 39 to 40 degrees Mark-a unprecedented event in the meteorological history of the city. Moreover, the heated air could hardly cool down the nights: in coastal areas and the PO level, night temperatures around 30 degrees are possible. With such values one speaks of “Supertropical Nights”, a rare phenomenon in Italy.
The seawater is also exceptionally warm: 27 degrees on the Ligurian coast and in the Central Tyrrhenian Sea, in places even 28 to 29 degrees in the southern Tyrrhenian area, according to meteorologists.
Climate systems, ice and mass start from the cities
The Italians are increasingly investing in air conditioning systems to escape the heat – demand has risen sharply. Ice consumption is also increasing considerably. This strong question has increased prices in many ice cream parlors: according to consumer protection associations, prices for ice in Italy have risen by 30 percent in the last three years.
A massive escape from the cities had already started on Saturday. On Sunday morning, extremely heavy traffic was reported on the highways. Destinations of the heating plague were the sea and cooler mountain areas.
Germans also suffer from the heat
In Germany it will also be uncomfortable in the coming days. Up to 39 degrees are possible on Wednesday, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced in Offenbach. Tropical nights must also be expected in which it cools no less than 20 degrees. The DWD is waiting for a strong, regional extreme heat tax nationwide.
The heat and drought also increase the risk of forest fire. The DWD currently sees a very high danger, especially in the south of Brandenburg. There is therefore a high risk in almost all Baden-Württemberg, in the northern half of Bavaria and in parts of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. According to the prediction, the situation will deteriorate until Wednesday.
