Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of a Western monopoly on artificial intelligence (AI/AI). A new chapter is beginning for humanity in all areas of life, Putin said at an AI conference in Moscow on Friday. According to him, some Western search engines and generative AI models hide or suppress Russian language and culture.
Such Western algorithms essentially pretend that Russia does not exist, he said. “Of course, a monopoly and dominance of such systems, such foreign systems, is unacceptable and dangerous.”
Putin announced a new national AI strategy to expand applied and basic research.
At the conference, Putin praised the two Russian companies Sberbank and Yandex for developing their own generative AI systems. These should be further developed and applied in all sectors of the economy.
By far the two leading countries in AI are the US and China. Russian efforts have been slowed by the invasion of Ukraine: many well-educated Russians have left the country and cooperation with Western experts is largely prevented by international sanctions.
