The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) denounced on Friday that this week it had suffered “violent racist attacks” on its official Instagram profile, which has 17.2 million followers, and announced it would take judicial action.
According to the CBF, various comments “compared Brazilian players and fans to monkeys”, as they also did in the profile of Rodrygo will go, Real Madrid forward, after his fight with Argentine Lionel Messi last Tuesday in the Brazil-Argentina event at the Maracaná (0-1).
In those messages he was also insulted the president of the entity, Ednaldo Rodrigues, labeled “pejoratively Indian.”
“This type of crime will not be tolerated,” said Brazilian football’s governing body, which reported that it had reported the facts to the Police to “identify and punish the perpetrators.”
Also, the CBF indicated that it had notified Instagram and that it had sent separate letters to FIFA and Conmebol reporting what happened.
“Our fight will continue and will not be interrupted by acts like this (…) There will be no truce. The fight against prejudice is one of the most important flags of the current administration,” said the CBF.
The arrogance of the CBF president
Of note, Ednaldo Rodrigues said he was proud of being “the first black, of indigenous origin, to occupy the presidency of the CBF” and stressed that he remains steadfast in his commitment to “transform Brazilian football into a healthy place.”
“I will never deviate from my promises, and I will not allow myself to be intimidated by criminals, racists, xenophobes and corrupt people who roam the shadows,” said Rodrigues.
Rodrygo too
The CBF’s reaction came a day after Rodrygo also denounced the “attack” of racist “offences” and “all kinds of nonsense” on his social networks.
The wave of insults came shortly after Tuesday’s gruesome Brazil-Argentina match at the Maracaná, which coincided with the sixth day of the South American qualifying group for the 2026 World Cup.
The match was marked by a brawl between both fans, forcing the police to intervene.
The Albiceleste players went to the locker room and returned to the Maracaná pitch 27 minutes later, with the situation under control.
FIFA disciplinary file
Now FIFA has opened a disciplinary procedure against CBF and AFA (Argentine Football Association) after the incidents. The governing body of international football accusing the CBF, host of the match, of “potential violations of article 17” of its disciplinary code, which stipulates the rules related to the order and safety of matches.
In its part, AFA will respond to potential violations of articles 17.2 (inappropriate behavior of fans) and 14.5 (delay in the start of the match).
Both teams risk fines in addition to home international matches with partial or total closure of their stadium, the two most common penalties.
