The government in Kiev will probably be concerned about further political developments after the elections in the Netherlands. If the victorious right-wing populist Geert Wilders actually forms a government, military aid to Ukraine could be stopped.
Wilders’ freedom party PVV spoke out against further military aid in its election manifesto. “We do not send our money and military equipment such as the F-16 to Ukraine, but keep them for our own army,” it said.
Defense Minister hopes that “the support will continue”
As a result of these and similar statements, inquiries from Western allies to current Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren are now apparently increasing. They feared that the Netherlands would stop supplying military assets such as F-16 fighter jets once Wilders joined the government. “I hope and expect that the support will continue,” the minister said on Friday.
The Netherlands has already sent the first F-16s to Romania. The training center for Ukrainian pilots is there.
