“We are off the streets immediately,” activists of the last generation said in a recent broadcast. Is the end of the protests near? If the climate stickers have their way, that is not impossible, but Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) must finally take action: “It is in his hands,” say the activists.
In fact, everyone wants the same thing: an end to roadblocks and the associated nerve-wracking traffic jams in the morning. “I, like many other people in Austria, do not understand the blocking of highways, which causes enormous economic damage and also increases CO2 emissions,” Nehammer said recently.
‘Nehammer can end protests immediately’
The activists of the last generation also long for an end to the protests – but only if certain actions are taken by the government. “Nehammer can end the protests immediately: as soon as he finally gets to work and implements the 93 sensible recommendations of the Climate Council, we will be off the streets immediately. Nehammer has it in his hands to end our disruptions immediately,” the activists mutter in their current broadcast.
Until then it will continue. The next protest will take place on Friday at the Praterstern in Vienna. At 2 p.m. the activists call for peaceful resistance.
