Tyrol presented itself on Saturday morning, partly covered in sugar, partly covered in snow. During the night Mrs. Holle began to greet her. With the exception of a few outliers, this had little impact on traffic. However, the avalanche situation is tense.
The weather forecast kept what it promised: the whole of Tyrol woke up on Saturday with a layer of snow. It started snowing late in the evening or at night, and in the morning the country really presented itself in winter clothes. Winter greetings have already reached the “Krone” from all over Tyrol.
Temperatures have dropped significantly. In the lower Ötztal, GeoSphere Austria measured lows of -10.6 degrees Celsius. The weather is expected to last through the weekend and beyond. According to GeoSphere, skies in North Tyrol will remain very cloudy to cloudy, but snow showers should decrease in the morning before intensifying again in the afternoon and continuing to increase in the evening. According to the weather service, the highest amounts of precipitation are expected in the Arlberg region and the Northern Alps.
In East Tyrol, on the other hand, there is a strong Tauern wind, which drives the snow showers in weaker form southwards. The maximum values are -1 to +3 degrees, in Lienz they can go up to 6 degrees. According to GeoSpere, it will still be wintery on Sunday, although the snowfall will gradually decrease.
Chain requirement and roadblock
There were no large amounts of snow on Saturday morning, but there was already demand for winter services. But there was no major traffic chaos. The ÖAMTC reported only some restrictions due to snowfall on Saturday morning. The Fern Pass between Nassereith and Biberwier was hit. The snow-covered, slippery road caused delays in both directions.
The B188 Silvrettastraße between Mathon and Wirl had to be closed: snow storms blocked the road. For vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, snow chain requirements were in force in some places on Saturday morning, namely at Pass Thurn, on Arlbergstrasse and on Hochkönigstrasse between Tyrol and Salzburg.
Avalanche danger at warning level 3
Meanwhile, snow on the mountains brought increased avalanche danger; on Saturday, the Tyrolean avalanche warning service assessed the situation as danger level 3 – significant. As reported, the first avalanche death of the season was caused on Thursday by a river that buried an alpinist from Poland near the bell tower in the Ötztal Alps.
